If you’re looking for a new way to document your
photography, ShutterCal may be a good setup for you.  It’s a free community based website that’s
got a unique twist.

Rather than simply uploading all your photos to the site
like you’d do with so many others, ShutterCal
takes one a day.  When you take a photo
that’s particularly interesting or representative of your day, upload it to ShutterCal
and it will appear on your calendar.

It’s a pretty simple service, but it’s a great way to do
photo projects.  If you’re focusing on
landscapes, for example, you can look through a year’s worth of landscape
photographs.  Going day by day it’s easier
to see where you can improve, and what you do particularly well.

The site is free to use, though you can order prints,
postcards and a few other cool things from the store.

Hot on the heels of the Panasonic announcement, Toshiba
showed off some SD cards of its own. 
Like Panasonic’s cards, these use the new specification.  Unlike Panasonic’s cards, they’re currently
the world’s fastest.

You’re looking at a read speed of up to 95 megabytes per
second and a potential write speed of 80. 
At 80 megabytes per second, you’re looking at a rate of five gigabytes a
minute.  That’s absolutely freakishly
fast.

The new cards from Toshiba come in 8, 16 and 32GB
capacities, while their MicroSD companions will be available in 4, 8, and
16.  You’ll see them all start to show up
in November, except the 8GB and 16GB SDHC cards, which will be coming in
December.

If you’re not familiar with variable neutral density
filters, they’re essentially adjustable filters that change the amount of light
allowed into your camera lens.  Since
it’s limiting the light to the lens, you can open your aperture for a shallow
depth of field or prolong your exposure time for a long motion blur.

 These filters can be
incredibly cool, but at around $100 a pop, they’re not exactly cheap.  You can create a similar effect though, with
a pair of cheap polarizing filters.  It
takes a little bit of work, but Peta
Pixel has a great tutorial that should have you up and running in no time.

The way it works is pretty simple.  Two polarizing filters set up parallel to one
another won’t block out any additional light. 
If you turn them at a 90 degree angle, you’ll block out a massive amount
of light.  For anything in between,
simply adjust.

This cheaper density filter isn’t perfect – you’ll still
have the polarizing effect on your camera, and you may have a bit of color
change too.  But for the price, it’s hard
to complain too much.
