Almost every season, Marc by Marc Jacobs is a shining beacon in a sea of endlessly expensive handbags. I’ve owned several of the brand’s bags and small accessories, and I’ve had consistently good luck with both the quality of materials and construction of the bags. With almost the entire line under $500, that’s a pretty good endorsement.

For Spring 2012, I’d really, really like to have one of the Marc by Marc Jacobs Wedie Satchels – this is the kind of bag that feels both current and like it could be an everyday staple. Now I just have to decide – neutral or colorblocked?

To be sure, both versions of the bags have their charm, and on a basic school satchel shape with a clean finish and little in the way of twee embellishment, this bag feels more adult-appropriate than some of Marc by Marc’s work. As much as I like colorblocking in general and this combination of navy, cerulean and ivory in particular, though, the all-beige version does something for me that bags in its color family rarely do. The combination of the unstitched edges and the slightly grey undertone gives the finished product a sense of modernism that’s missing when more colors are added. By my measure, this shape and its messenger bag cousin are the best venture from Marc by Marc Jacobs in several seasons. Buy through Saks for in beige or blue for $498.

Lanvin isn’t a company that messes with its stable of handbags often. Sure, seasonal styles come and go, but rarely does the French house launch a new design that will be added to the small group of bags that it produces season after season. Staring with Summer 2011, the Lanvin JL Bowling Bag will be the newest piece on that very short list.

The bag, named for Jeanne Lanvin, comes in several sizes and a variety of leathers and colors right off the bat. The photo above and those after the jump all feature the medium size, but Lanvin indicates that a smaller version, shoulder bag and clutch will also be available. The smaller bowler in black or chestnut leather is already available via Bergdorf Goodman for $2545, and the medium python iteration can be found at Luisa Via Roma for $5950. Thanks to Amanda for holding down the virtual PurseBlog fort while Vlad and I spent Christmas in Germany and the Czech Republic. I planned to do some work while abroad, but we spent every minute of every day exploring new cities and taking in the culture (and cuisine). Bottega Veneta is known for their premium leathers and superb quality, and that gets me thinking that this trolley would be the ultimate luxury.

The chocolate intrecciato leather is the perfect hue of neutral that will also not show wear as quickly as other colors. The black acetate handle extends as you would expect from any trolley and the inside has a zip-fastening compartment, padlock, and detachable protective twill sleeve. Seeing as how Bottega’s classic Veneta bag costs nearly $3,000, the price tag for this spacious piece of luggage seems reasonable. Buy via Net-A-Porter for $4,900.
